Miscellany & Technical

Why are small smartphone screens not supported for viewing this website's pages?

Although the image and color quality on majority of smartphones are very good (great even!) these days, experience has shown that viewing photo or video samples that are already not so big in size themselves on such tiny screens, prove to be a total failure because of the former items steep drop in resolution and loss of pixels that result in over-resizing and other 'smoothing' techniques by online viewer or player automated conversion tricks.

Besides, when viewing really fine image samples on even the best of smartphones' small screens, many details cannot be discerned effectively anyways even if the screen's resolution is high enough to show a high quality image without degradation.

That's why when setting up this website, the designer decided to stay loyal to larger screen sizes with better overall clarity and greater ability to show more detail, which is the main idea behind the presentation of imagery that are of higher precision as well as more pleasing aesthetic looks the photographer usually has  in mind when both taking as well as showing off his technical skills and artistry.

More detailed info

This website was primarily designed and optimized for viewing on a 1920 x 1200 pixels 22" monitor (a Lenovo ThinkVision) with an aspect ratio of 1.6 (16:10) that is not exactly 1.7 (16:9, the more popular video screen ratio) really, although it is close enough.

But there is a slight yet important problem here: after entering this website on a 16:9 (1600 x 900 pixels) 19" monitor, some 'side dishes' or extra 'off center' videos on the video samples page were 'cut off' at the edge of the monitor's screen and were not shown in full width.

It is of course possible to design a website with a 'flexible resizing' capability, or simply redesign everything for various screen sizes and resolution formats so that most if not all displays on different devices (smartphones, phablets, tablets, laptops, desktops etc.) would show things in a more or less uniform fashion ... But wouldn't that mean not only a lot of extra, as well as --more importantly-- useless work, considering the fact that smaller screens are not quite fit for precision and detailed show off of imagery after all?

Conclusion

Use high quality large size panoramic monitors to enjoy watching artworks or video: they're better! ;-)

So far, the following monitor sizes and aspect ratios have been proven to show this website in either its initially intended layout, or with minimum 'loss of info' when extra items are placed outside the customary old times 4:3 screen ratio that is still in use in quite a number of desktop computers and laptops monitors.

(In fact, the online website page design service in use here supports the 4:3 format by default but it does also let the designer use the adjacent areas outside that frame just as well.)

♣ 1.7 (1600 x 900 / 1920 x 1080 or similar)

1.6 (1920 x 1200 or similar)

♠ 7", 8", 10" tablet screens (Amazon Fire 7", iPad Mini 8", iPad 10" or similar)
♦ 4:3 (1024 x 768 and similar: acceptable but not recommended because at its best, some web pages here will have to be resized and/or scrolled up and down / left and right a lot!)

Tested / failed monitor sizes: iPhone: 4/4s; 5s; 6+; BLU Dash L

Best option so far: the 22" Lenovo ThinkVision 16:10 monitor referred to above.
